Mediated settlements must be approved by the Court.

In family disputes, settlements are presented to a Judge who must approve the settlement. Once approved, an Order is issued which makes the mediated settlement just as binding as a Judge's decision would be after litigation and a trial.

In civil disputes, the mediated settlement may be entered as a judgement, or the parties can agree simply to dismiss any pending lawsuits.
